Art Blocks is pleased to announce the opening of public minting for Daniel Calderon Arenas’s project Marfa Yucca, at the Art Blocks Gallery, beginning Friday, January 20, 2023.

Marfa Yucca draws on the vast, harsh landscape of the Chihuahuan desert, the persistence of nature in the face of adversity, and the visual language of Minimalism. During a visit to Donald Judd’s 100 untitled works in mill aluminum (1982–86) at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa in the summer of 2022, Arenas witnessed a rare yucca bloom. The juxtaposition of fragility and toughness of the yucca bloom as a counterpoint to the gleaming architectural surfaces of the sculptures provided Arenas the starting point for this body of work.

The counterpoint of nature and architecture in Marfa Yucca thus embodies the artist’s intent in presenting a personal, artistic point of view, while balancing the central formal elements of line, color, and perspective.
