We spent August celebrating Chromie Squiggle, and honestly, the more we talked to the community, the more we realized we had to make a film about it.
First Generation: Chromie Squiggle is the first in our new documentary series, and it starts where everything started - with Erick running his family's tile business, doodling these colorful, wiggly lines for clients. But Erick had this wild idea: what if blockchain entropy could actually be a design ingredient? What if those random hash strings could become unique artworks?
"The algorithm reads each hash like a packet of randomness," Erick explains in the film. It's a simple concept that created trillions of possible variations with zero repeats. And somehow, collectors got it immediately. But the film explores something deeper.
The film digs into something that still fascinates us: when you collect a Chromie Squiggle, what exactly do you own? The image? The algorithm? The creative process itself? These aren't just philosophical questions - they're the foundation of generative art as a medium.
Chromie Squiggle wasn't just Art Blocks' first collection. It proved an entire concept could work.

First Generation launches our monthly documentary series as part of Art Blocks 500. Each month, we're telling the stories of the collections that built this movement from the ground up.
