**Gels** is a science-inspired generative piece. Our algorithm simulates *gel electrophoresis*, a powerful experimental method in molecular biology used daily by thousands of scientists worldwide. In the lab, scientists "run a gel" to separate and visualize molecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins. These molecules appear as patterns of bands when photographed, and those patterns can be used to interpret the results of experiments. 

The DNA band patterns in this work derive from combinations of a simulated experimental data and real-world data, including DNA sequences that encode several variants of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, and the corresponding mRNA vaccines. Our algorithm first generates plausible sample tubes that typically contain one or more DNA fragments. Then, each sample is distributed and "run" on a simulated gel to create the characteristic band patterns that might be observed on real gels.

Our simulations also take into account human error — mistakes are common in the lab, especially for novice researchers, but they can also lead to visually interesting results. For example, uneven salt concentrations or applying excess voltage can cause warping effects.

Finally, we aim to leverage proceeds of this project to support future scientific research! We invite interested collectors to follow along with our future work.

Gels

In the year 3075 of the Second Nuclear Age, a laboratory of an unknown race of aliens was discovered on the planet Vtolmr while drilling a well of molecular oil. Its presumed purpose is to study genetic mutations of races from neighboring planets. During the laboratory investigation, 512 silicon impressions with DNA of different alien species were extracted. Modern methods of quantum analysis do not allow the deciphering of the data obtained. At this point, their value is purely aesthetic. But that may change in time.

'transparency' is a generative artwork that explores the connection between the fundamental elements of art and the viewer's perception of it. square figures, like pixels forming a picture, create prefigurative, fuzzy images with watercolor motifs. through the use of shapes, colors, and composition, the artwork aims to create a visual language inspired by pioneers of various media such as Paul Klee, Anni Albers, Hilma af Klint, and Alexey Pajitnov.

the use of square figures in 'transparency' is reminiscent of the basic things we drew as children, creating a sense of nostalgia and simplicity. the overlapping transparent rectangles add a sense of depth and tonal variety to the piece, and incorporation of watercolor effects gives it some lightness. the artwork is an expression of emotion in a way that connects with the viewer on a primal level. it is an exploration of the fundamental relationship between art, emotions and the ability of forms and colors to evolve.

transparency

Initially worn by miners and cowboys, roughly half of the world’s population wears denim on a given day, and the range of styles is–literally–endless. A new pair of jeans might be acid bleached, sandblasted, stonewashed, or tie-dyed; it can have hand-sanded rips and tears, followed by visible mendings, patches, intentional paint stains, and more. In an epic attempt to crack the genetic code of denim, Jenim playfully but carefully observes and translates the warp and weft of denim into generative code, weaving unique iterations of irregular, distorted, or hyper-realistic textile crops.

Ironically, imitating aging, a pair of jeans produced today generates more pollution and labor than most average garments. In response, Jenim’s minted iterations go beyond wearables and into infinity. Each year that passes, the color might fade slightly; the rips might expand. Who knows what these artworks will look like ten or even fifty years from now?

Enchiridion is inspired by the Enchiridion Physicae Restitutae by Jean D'Espagnet which rejected the idea of the empyrean, claiming that all natural things exist in unity. This is represented through geometric forms which show structure, unity, and causation vs. the amorphous forms of Empyrean.
