This project explores the highly mathematical world of Islamic geometric patterns.

Islamic design is one of the world's great artistic traditions, but not much is known about the methods used by artisans in centuries past to construct them. One of the first attempts to formalize the geometry behind Islamic patterns was E.H. Hankin's seminal 1908 paper "Polygons in Contact", which remains a key technique today. Our project combines the approach described by Hankin with transformations of designs found at real-world historical sites.

Two Mathematicians avoids traditional ornamentation and colouring. It seeks to find beauty in the geometry of the patterns themselves, embellishing only with subtle combinations of basic line and dot shapes. Its two archetypes contrast the precision and order found in Islamic patterns with the informality of a rough draft. In that, it reflects the personalities of its creators, alternating between the obsessive need for order and exactness, and the embrace of just winging it.

Wave Schematics

"Invisibles" is a collection of generative art that takes you on a journey through fantastical cities and unreal architecture. Infused with a sense of imagination and wonder, aspires to be a visual joy and dream-like in its heart.

Inspired by the novel "The Invisible Cities" (Italo Calvino), a book with algorithmic qualities, this work incorporates several themes and concepts, from exploring new ideas, lands, and cultures to the interplay between reality and fiction. Like the book's exploration of Venice, the pieces in "Invisibles" are rooted in the essence of Hong Kong, a city the creator called home for nine years.

Each piece in this series captures the spirit of a different city, creating a beautiful and intricate mosaic of shapes, and patterns. The detailed engravings of architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries influenced its visual style while exploring the conceptual connection between engravings and code as a generation source.

This collection is plottable and aims to transcend the digital realm becoming tangible as an added dimension to the artwork beyond digital printing. Bringing the generative drawing into the physical world while turning plotting into the equivalent of 21st-century engraving.

Speckled Summits

Ode to Penrose is a celebration of the natural beauty of aperiodic tilings, especially of the ones discovered by Sir Roger Penrose. These tilings lie at the intersection of complex mathematical problems and gorgeous visual aesthetics arising from finite amounts of simple objects.

This project introduces novel ways to use Penrose tiles. Unlike in traditional deterministic usage of these tiles, stochasticity plays a very important part of the script. Randomness can affect things like the total amount of the tiles used, their orientation, coloring, and size. Familiar patterns can be witnessed in some outputs and yet they are completely absent in others. Despite this, perhaps surprisingly, each output could be completed into a traditional Penrose tiling without erasing any lines.
