Over 600 people made the journey to the Third Annual Art Blocks Marfa Weekend, which took place from September 21 to 24, 2023. Attendees from all parts of the world traveled to the West Texas desert to celebrate both community and art. More than 25 events and activations were spread across 10 different locations, highlighting several artists on our platform and the surrounding Marfa community. Here’s a sample of what we experienced:

Thursday

Art Blocks Marfa Weekend 2023 Thursday check-in and welcome reception.

One of the early highlights of the weekend was seeing marfaMESH come to life. This was a newly released Art Blocks Explorations project where attendees were given a lanyard upon check-in, which held a unique marfaMESH NFC card powered by IYK. From there, you could meet and interact with other guests using the marfaMESH app and tap the back of your mobile device to the NFC cards, capturing data and altering the artwork. The anonymous data included geolocation zones, scene composition, and color values from photos taken within the app.

These seven projects, selected from a range of artworks released on the Art Blocks platform over the past year, used computation as a medium to explore ideas of the collective unconscious, the personal and universal concept of memory, and the interplay of natural and digital forms.
