Each of the 89 Bright × Empty Rooms contains six complete rooms from 923 Empty Rooms, one for each city: Tokyo, Berlin, London, New York, Mexico City, and Los Angeles.

89 Bright × Empty Rooms is a further evolution of An Empty Room, commissioned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) for the Coded: Art Enters the Computer Age, 1952–1982 exhibition.
